George Washington University is situated in urban location in downtown Washington, DC, it is ideal for fans of politics and city life. The school is spread across the DC Foggy Bottom neighbor, near the State Department and about a mile away from museums on the National Mall and the Washington Monument. The freshmen do not have to live on campus, while about three fourths choose to do so. The school’s sports teams are named as the Colonials, and compete in Division I Atlantic 10 Conference. A costumed student called as George, named for George Washington, is the school mascot, though a ten foot inflatable character called as Big George and an on-campus statue of a hippopotamus are unofficial mascots. There are over 400 organizations on campus, and students can begin their own clubs with an original idea and four other members. Around 25 percent of students are involved in the school’s large Greek system. The TRAIL program takes students for the outdoor excursions such as kayaking, hiking, and horseback riding. Student publications include The Daily Colonial, The GW Patriot and the GW Hatchet.
The school has large graduate offerings, and it’s Law School and the Graduate School of Education and Human Development are specifically well regarded. The scores of famous GW graduates are the politicians Harry Reid and Eric Cantor, the former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell, and performers comprising Courteney Cox Arquette. Alec Baldwin went to GW but did not graduate from it.
