Classification:

Welds are classified according to their position, shape and type of joint. According to their position (Figure 12), welds are classified as

(a) Horizontal;

(b) Vertical; and

(c) Overhead.

According to their shape, welds are classified as

(a)        Fillet weld;

(b)       Groove weld; and

(c)        Slot weld.

Welds are also classified according to their type of joint (Figure 14) as

(a)        Butt jointed weld; (b)          Lap joint weld;

(c)        Tee-joint weld;     (d)           Corner weld; and

(e)        Edge weld.
