Siliconizing
It consists of impregnation of an iron base material with silicon. The temperature range of this process is 925 to 1000oC. The work is heated in contact along with a silicon bearing material such as silicon carbide, and chlorine gas is utilized as catalyst. The increase in wear resistance by siliconizing is due to a low coefficient of friction and nongalling properties. Siliconized cases have been utilized on pump-shafts, conveyor chain links, valve guides, valves, cylinder liners and fittings for the chemical and oil industries.
