Introduction To Tribology

Wear is a major limiting factor in the life of all of machines and mechanisms and is due principally to what is called 'friction' among surfaces that rub together. The term tribology was provided to the theory and practice of contacting surfaces in relative motion. The new name was lately introduced, simply because other terms in common use (such like wear friction and lubrication) refer only to a part of the technology of moving surfaces in contact. Tribology covers all of the aspects of this technology including, bearing design, friction lubrication systems and wear. It is mostly concerned with machines and mechanisms, but there are also cases where surfaces rub together outside a machine.
