Piers

It is a vertical member commonly constructed of stone or brick masonry to support a beam, arch or lintel etc., the width of that exceeds four times its thickness. The piers are made monolithic along with the wall for the reasons of increasing the stability and stiffness of the wall to carry more concentrated loads.

Brick piers are commonly built in either English Bond or Double Flemish Bond. The major function of brick piers attached to main walls is to give a large bearing area for providing support to the roof. It also helps in increasing the stability of the wall through stiffening it at intermediate points along the length of the wall.
