Virus genera

Virus genera group virus species that share the common characteristics of the family but are distinct from other genera within that family; genera are designated by the suffix-virus. For example the genera Varicellovirus and Simplexvirus are distinct members of the Alphaherpesvirinae subfamily. The criteria for designating genera vary from family to family but involved structural, genetic and other differences.
