The following are elements constituting a lumped parameter vibratory system
The Mass
The mass is supposed to be rigid and concentrated at the centre of gravity.
The spring
It is supposed that the elasticity is represented by a helical spring. While deformed either it loses energy or hold it. The energy stored in the spring is specified by
PE = (1/2) k x2
Here k is stiffness of the spring. The force at the spring is given by following
F = kx
The springs work like restoring element. They are treated as massless.
The Damper
Mechanical Vibration In a vibratory system the damper is an element that is responsible for loss of energy in the system. It changes energy into heat because of friction that may be either viscous friction or sliding friction. Vibratory systems halt vibration due to energy conversion through damper. There are two kinds of dampers.
