Part to be cast is specified in terms of a multi digit code; each digit signifying some specific part attribute. The part attributes are hierarchically classified as under.

Geometry Related
- Casting Weight
- Maximum casting size
- Minimum and maximum section thickness
- Minimum and Maximum core size
- Shape complexity
Quality Related
- Dimensional Tolerance
- Surface finish
- Soundness (void size)
- Distortion allowance
Production Related
- Order quantity
- Production rate
- Lead Time
Some of these attributes (e.g. shape complexity) are subjective in nature and are quantitatively assigned by the process planning/foundry engineer.
