The Password File
This is used to modify passwords for user and group accounts. The normal user might only modify the password for his own account, the superuser might change the password for any account. The administrator of a group might change the password for the group. passwd also modify the account information, such as the full name of the user, the login shell, or password expiry intervals and dates.
