Printing Files

In some cases, it might be needed to take a hard copy of the documents which have been disk. This needs the document to be printed on a sheet of paper.  In this, a printer is to be attached to the system. A system should request the printer to print the needed document. It is   the task of the system administrator to setup the printer.

lp

lp spools the output to the printer queue. A Spooling is the process of sending the output to a temporary storage field for later processing through the printer.

Syntax

lp         filename

In the given syntax filename is the name of the document to be printed.

The print jobs are placed in a print queue as printer requests. A request id consists of destination printer name and a sequence number. The given example display in which the file myfile is sent to the printer 'hplj' for printing and the request id is hplj-15.

# lp myfile
