Selection of Power Cable
The subsequent factors influence the selection of cable:
- Load;
- System voltage;
- Type of insulation;
- Short circuit rating;
- Mode of installation; and
- Economy and safety.
For the similar conductor size, the maximum continuous current carrying capacity depends on the depth of laying, silicon oil resistivity, ground temperature, ambient temperature, proximity of other cables, kind of ducts used. Paper Insulated Lead Covered, PVC and XLPE cables are being used. Depending upon the voltage at that the power is transmitted or distributed, the cables are designed as follows:
A. EHV Cables
|
66 kV and above
|
B.Medium and HV Cables
|
3.3 kV to 33 KV
|
C. LT Cables
|
up to 1100 V
