Application Server

An application server is a machine which serves as a host replacement (and in a few cases really is a host.). When applications are downsized from a host one method is to install the applications on a smaller machine which runs the similar software and to hook all the users to the new box.  This process needs no modifications to the host based application software.  For client server applications which are classified as host based the host is the serve to the GUI based clients.
