Wooden Gantries
In construction operations, while structural materials are beyond the capacity of manual handling, the gantries are used. Gantries are given along with lifting tackle to handle heavy construction stones, blocks and other materials.
A gantry commonly consists of timber staging (by steel staging could also be used) for carrying a traveling crane and is made of squared timbers in a same manner as the masons' scaffolding. But, in this kind, only one row of standards on either side of the wall is given. On the top of the standards, longitudinal pieces known as runners are given along the wall, over that cross-pieces known as rails are given to carry the traveling platform. Traveling platform within turn carries a lifting tackle moving on the rails in a direction perpendicular to the length of the gantry. This lifting tackle at last delivers the construction units at the desired height.
