Focusing on Bottlenecks:
In the recent past, some of the production planning and control systems have turned their interest towards the production of bottlenecks. Under the bottleneck operations, the arrival rates of the products are extremely faster than their completion rate. This way the whole production procedure is constrained by the binding capacity of the products. The entire system is controlled by the action of the concepts such as: buffer, drum and rope. At the bottleneck points, the production procedure is controlled and this complete process is known as drums because it establishes the beat to be followed by all other operations. Furthermore, the master production schedule (MPS) may be obtained by drums. A buffer in the form of time is stored before a bottleneck to attain continuous production. These buffers give the assurance of meeting due date requirements of the customers with high reliability. A rope behaves as a communication medium (that means. a schedule) that prevents the building of large inventories. Also, the rope helps the master production schedule (MPS) by coordinating the required activities. The rope ensures that every production stage is synchronized to the master production schedule (MPS).
