Operational Considerations
The water and steam hammer are not unusual occurrences in the industrial plants. Flow changes in piping systems must be completed slowly as part of excellent operator practice. To save water and steam hammer, operators must sure the liquid systems are appropriately vented and make sure gaseous or steam systems are appropriately drained during the start-up. Whenever possible, initiate pump begins against a closed release valve, and open the discharge valve gradually to initiate system flow. When possible, start-up the smaller capacity pumps before larger capacity pumps. Using warm-up valves around the main stream stop valves whenever possible. When probable, close pump discharge valves before stopping the pumps. Periodically confirm proper function of moisture traps and air traps throughout operation.
