Environmental challenges
Privatisation attempt in India are likely to collect momentum in the coming years, like most public sector units face survival problems. (For instance Air India has 750 employees per aircraft that makes it the most over-staffed airline in the world. Air India's charge per employee is over Rs 5 lakh a year, possibly uppermost among Indian public sector units. Similarly, Delhi Transport Corporation contains 30,000 employees, of which 15,000 are excess and the annual expenses on this excess staff works out to Rs 22 crore!) Mounting costs, growing wage bills, developed competition, inefficient operations, debt burden, outdated technology etc. will compel several public sector units to either draw the shutters down or search for private sector partners. The burden if training and retraining employees with opinion to make them more productive and useful under the new set-up is going to fall on the shoulders of HR managers. Having this the legal stipulations covering selection and recruitment of employees, employment of retained category employees, minorities etc. are also possible to lose their significance over a period of time.
