Overview of Wastewater Treatment Technologies
Physical, chemical and biological techniques are used to remove contaminants from wastewater. In sequence to achieve various levels of contaminant removal, individual wastewater treatment process is combined within a variety of systems, categorized as primary, secondary and tertiary wastewater treatment. More rigorous treatment of wastewater involves the removal of specific contaminants as well as the removal and control of nutrients. Natural systems are also used to the treatment of wastewater within land-based applications. The sludge resulting from wastewater treatment operations is treated through several methods in order to decrease its water and organic content and make it suitable for last disposal and reuse.
