Types of Transformer

Transformers could be categorized based on the type of core used, type of cooling used, and the method of mounting the transformer or the intended use for that it is designed. We should deal with the first three categories of transformers. Here we provide a brief introduction to the categorization of transformers on the basis of their use as power transformers and distribution transformers. Power substations use power transformers although the distribution substations employ distribution transformers. Although the underlying principle of operation is the similar for both the transformers, they differ in their design because they are needed to operate under various conditions at power and distribution substations. Table provides a comparison of these two types of transformers.
