Basic Layout Operations
The preparation of the work surface and laying out straight lines are the basic operations carried out in order to make a layout. Because the accuracy of the finished work-piece depends on the correctness of the layout, proper care should be taken throughout the process. Combination tools are utilized where the accuracy is not important. Square head is utilized to lay out horizontal and parallel straight lines. The bevel protractor is utilized for laying out angles whereas the centre head is used to layout the centre of round and square work-piece.

1. Know how to get ready the work surface for layout,
2. Layout straight lines by using:
- The scriber and combination square
- The surface gauge and surface plate
- The vernier surface plate and height gauge
3. Locate centre holes by:
- Hermaphrodite calipers
- Centre head
- Surface gauge.
