Intensive and Extensive Properties
Thermodynamic properties can be separated into two general modules, intensive and extensive properties. The intensive property is independent of the quantity of mass. The value of an extensive property differs directly with the mass. Therefore, if a quantity of matter in a given state is divided into two equivalent parts, each part will have similar value of intensive property as the original and half the value of the extensive property. Pressure, temperature, specific volume, and density are illustrations of intensive properties. Total volume and Mass are illustrations of extensive properties.
