Calculate Thermal Stress:
Example: The given carbon steel bar constrained at both ends and what is the thermal stress while heated from 60°F to 540°F?
Solution:
α = 5.8 x 10-6/°F (from Table 1)
E = 3.0 x 107 lb/in.2 (from Table 1 and Module 2)
T = 540°F - 60°F = 480°F
Stress = F/A = Eα?T = (3.0 x 107 lb/in.2) x (5.8 x 10-6/°F) x 480°F
Thermal stress = 8.4 x 104 lb/in.2 (that is higher than the yield point)
