Managers at all levels need to plan, organize, lead and control. However depending on the nature, the organization, the size of the organization and the levels of management, differences among managers in the amount of time they devote to each of these activities. For example the manager of a big retail store like Uchumi will spend his time quite differently from the manager of a smaller retail outlet like a shop or kiosk.

Scholars over the years have tried to explain how managers spend their time by developing certain roles that managers play at different levels.
