The Pseudomonas group
The straight rods of Pseudomonas g-Proteobacteria are often encountered in enrichment cultures due to their nutritional versatility – some species can utilize more than 100 several organic compounds. The genus Pseudomonas also includes a significant number of plant pathogens. The Despite their ubiquitous nature they are still related with some serious human diseases mostly opportunistic infections of wounds and cystic fibrosis. The best studied in the group is Pseudomonas aeruginosa, characterized through, between other things, the ability to produce a fluorescent pigment on certain media. Collectively the group including Pseudomonas, Cupriavidus, Xanthomonas, Comamonas, Burkholderi, and Brevundimonas is known as the pseudomonads, while these genera do not share any distinct phylogeny within the Proteobacteria.
