Clostridium
The members of this genus are phylogenetically distinct but morphologically same to Bacillus. They are sometimes referred to as clostridia and lack any respiratory chain. This renders them obligate anaerobes generating ATP solely through substrate-level phosphorylation. Although organisms like as Clostridium tetani tetanus, food poisoning, C. perfringens gas gangrene and C. botulinum cause medical problems, Clostridium acetobutylicum can be used to biologically synthesize butanol, ethanol, isopropanol and other alcohols rather than using fossil fuel-based alternatives.
