Classification Based on Constraint of the Follower:

To follow the motion according to the cam contour, it is essential that the follower remains in touch along the cam at all speeds and at all times. The cams may be category according to the manner in which the above need can be fulfilled.

Pre-loaded Spring Cam:

In this case, a spring is utilized that forces follower to remain in contact with the cam.

Positive-drive Cam:

In this case, the contact among cam and the follower is maintained through a roller follower that operates in a groove of the cam. The groove have the follower in location.

Gravity Cam:

In this case, the rise of the follower is attained through the rising surface of the cam & the follower keeps contact with cam throughout return because of gravity force but there can be uncertainty of contact and because of this these cams are not preferred.
