Oxidation of the elements (example by AsF₅) in an appropriate solvent like SO₂ or H₂SO₄ gives a series of polyatomic cations like [S₈]²⁺ and [S₄]²⁺. The later (and its Se and Te analogs) has a square-planar structure and can be referred like a 6π-electron ring. Also of note are sulfur-nitrogen compounds. The cage-like S₄N₄  is created through the reaction of S₂Cl₂ with ammonia or NH₄Cl. Passing the heated vapor above silver wool provides the planar S₂N₂ with similar valence electron count like [S₄]²⁺. Polymerization creates polythiazyl (SN)_x, a linear polymer with metallic conductivity occuring from delocalization of the one odd electron per SN unit.
