Stresses in Beams:

While a beam is loaded along bending moments, external loads, & shear forces are set up at all sections of the beam. The values of shear forces and bending moments at several sections of the beam might be found. These have been explained in the previous unit.

In this unit, we are going to learn regarding bending and the bending stress distribution, moment of resistance, section modulus & shear stress distribution in beams of several cross-section.

Objectives

After learning this unit, you must be able to

• describe bending stress and moment of resistance,
• appraise the bending stress at any layer of beam,
• design the cross section of beam subjected to loads,
• Find out the load bearing capacity of a beam.
