Simple Stresses and Strains:
After studying this simple stresses and strains, you should be able to
- know the concepts of stress, strain and deformation,
- elaborate the effect of forces on deformable solids and the relationship among stress and strain for typical materials,
- define the elastic properties of solids and their deformations because of direct forces,
- understand the methods of analysing composite bars,
- elaborates the deformations and stresses caused through temperature variation,
- compute stresses on oblique sections, and
- describe the elastic constants and their interrelationships.
While you have clearly learnt these concepts, you will be able to use your knowledge to know the behaviour of solids under easy loadings and will be able to design such members. You will also be able to verify although such members are safe under the loads they are subjected to. Further, you will also be able to search the load carrying capacity of members whose elastic and geometric properties are known.
