Simple Stresses and Strains
You have already study how to analyse a given truss and find the forces induced in the various individual members. Afterwards you will be introduced to various other types of structures and shall learn how to find the forces induced in the members because of the forces applied on the structure. Such type of analysis forms the essence of Structural Analysis. Our concern in Strength of Material is what happens to the individual members, while they have to carry these forces. Since you advance in your study of strength of materials, you shall realise that the two subjects are closely interrelated and together they compose the foundation for the design of a big variety of structures. In this unit, you shall be introduced to the analysis of simple stresses & strains induced in members.
Objectives
After learning this unit, you must be able to
- Understand the concepts of strain, stress and deformation,
- Elaborate the effect of forces on deformable solids & the relationship among stress and strain for typical materials,
- Depict the elastic properties of solids & their deformations because of direct forces,
- Know about the methods of analysing composite bars,
- Depict the deformations & stresses caused by temperature variation,
- Determine stresses on oblique sections, and
- Describe the elastic constants and their interrelationships.
When you have clearly learnt these concepts, you shall be able to utilize your knowledge to understand the behaviour of solids under simple loadings and shall be able to design such members. You will also be able to check whether such members are safe under the loads they are subjected to. Additionally, you will also be able to discover the load carrying capacity of members whose geometric & elastic properties are known.
