Installation and spacing of storage tanks:

In further information concerning protection, installation, and spacing of storage tanks situated above ground, underground, or in fields subject to flooding is beyond the scope of this course. It may be found in the National Fire Protection Association Standards if this information is desired.

Flammable or combustible liquids within sealed containers represent a potential hazard rather than an active hazard -- and possibility of fire from without.  Through the similar reasoning, within storage rooms are undesirable. They should be isolated as much as possible, and located at or above ground level if they must be used.   That should not be located over basements and should preferably be along an exterior wall.

Each inside storage room shall be given along with either gravity (low level intake) or a continuous mechanical exhaust ventilation system. The mechanical ventilation must be used if Class I liquids are hold or dispensed within the room.

Storage cabinets have exact limits on the amount and class of flammable or combustible liquids which might be stored in them.  That must be sealed and constructed so as to be fire resistant. Cabinets should be labeled conspicuously -- FLAMMABLE-KEEP FIRE AWAY.

The most advisable storage facility is a divided building set a few distances from generally occupied plant areas. The construction could be same to that given for inside storage rooms. The category and classes of combustible and flammable liquids stored will determine the best design to be used.
