Austenitic Stainless Steels
Such steel has austenitic structure. Carbon is less than 0.2 where Cr varies in between 16% and 24% while Ni from 8 to 22%. Ni assists stabilizing austenite. Mn and Si, respectively vary in between 2 to 10% and as well as 1 to 3%. Addition of 0.15% makes such steel free cutting. The most widely utilized verity is 18.8 stainless steel which have 18% Chromium and 8% Nickel. Such steel can be simply cold worked and doesn’t strain harden. This is used for chemical plants, mainly along with joints. This is, though, susceptible to intergranular corrosion.
