Barriers to Standardisation

In spite of many advantages of standardization listed above, an organisation insisting on a standardization programme faces numerous difficulties. Some of these are listed below

  • The production (or user) departments are often accustomed to using branded products and their prejudice is so strong that they are averse to trying new, though standard.
  • It generally needs a lot of patience to persuasion and dogged perseverance to carry out the mandate of standardisation.
  • Similarly, if they have made a design of their own for a product, it is difficult to convince them that a different design could prove equally efficacious and at the same time be economical.
  • The likes and dislikes of user departments dominate too immensely to result in lack of participation and cooperation.
  • There may even be disagreement or resistance from the management if the company investment in favour of a particular product (or a design) is substantial even though another product or design is found to be more satisfactory from the standardization point of view.
  • It has to convincingly demonstrate that despite the investment, it is essential to switch over to the standard product.
