Standardization offers numerous advantages when looked from angles. However, the advantages are listed here under are viewed from maintenance corner :

In manufacturing vis-à-vis Maintenance

Cost Reduction

The most important advantage is reduction in unit cost. Standardization limits the manufacturer to a few identified models and hence rationalizing his product range to a few preferred sizes, shapes, etc.

Less Tool Cost and Setting Time

If there are few models, obviously there will be fewer tool changes, reduced set up times and longer runs due to higher volume for each item.

Scope for Design Out Maintenance and LRA

Standardisation provides a large scope for the maintenance by Least Replaceable Assembly (LRA) units and Design Out Maintenance.

Increased Mechanisation

Since continuity of each operation for longer period is assured there is greater justification for the manufacturer to introduce increased mechanization or better tools or special purpose plant and machinery.

Reduced Material Handling

Material handling costs are also reduced. All these benefits result in higher productivity.
