Handling Tools and Material
Several serious cuts are caused by handling sharp tools or material not properly. Likewise, permanent back injury can be resulted because of improper lifting techniques.
These accidents can be avoided by:
(1) All the time remove the burr or sharp edges from work-piece. Sharp edges are hazardous. Whenever part is to be removed from a machine, make sure to remove burrs along with a file.
(2) Never handle sharp tools or cutters by hand. While handling sharp tools like milling cutters, it is wise to make use of a rag to avoid cuts if they should have tendency to slip.
(3) Make Use of proper lifting techniques for lifting tools and materials. Several back injuries have been caused by improper lifting of heavy work-pieces. The technique of lifting material is as follows:
- Seat on your heels, bending your knees and ensure that your back is straight.
- Grasp the material securely and utilize your leg muscles to raise the load. Keep your back straight; bending your back can put excessive strain on it.
- Lower the material to the floor through bending the knees.
