Sialons

Mixtures of silicon nitride, alumina and aluminium nitride is hot pressed to achieve a product largely known as sialon. In the consequential product the structure has partially aluminium substituted for silicon and oxygen for nitrogen. This manufactured has better properties than silicon nitride. The compacted mixture is sintered further in presence of densifying constituents. The sintered material is dense with decreased porosity and develops strength near to 400 MPa. Mixture of alumina and silicon might be nitrided and sintered to achieve the same product. Sialons are increasingly being utilized at high speeds as abraiding tool in manufacturing processes.
