Classification of reactions:
There are several of reactions in organic chemistry, but we can simplify the picture through grouping these reactions into several categories. To start with, we can categorize reactions as being:
1. Acid/base reactions;
2. Functional group transformations;
3. Carbon-carbon bond formations.
The 1st type of reaction is comparatively simple and includes the reaction of an acid along with a base to give a salt. The 2nd type of reaction is in which one functional group can be converted into another. Generally these reactions are comparatively straightforward and proceed in high yield. The 3rd type of reactions is very important to organic chemistry because these are the reactions that allow the chemist to construct complex molecules from simple starting materials. Generally, these reactions are the most difficult and temperamental to perform.
