Detection and Measurement of Radiations:
Detection of nuclear radiations emitted by radioisotopes depends upon the type of radiation, its energy and the nature of the material with which they interact. In order to detect nuclear radiations, a device capable of converting the energy of the radiation into an electrical signal, commonly a voltage pulse is used. This device must meet following criteria.
i) There must be strict proportionality between the number of photons or particles interacting with the detector and the number of pulses generated.
ii) There must be linear relationship between the energy of radiation and the amplitude of the voltage pulse (called pulse height).
