Formation of an alkoxide ion:

Alcohols will generally react with stronger electrophiles as compared to water. Though, they are less likely to react with nucleophiles if not the latter are also strong bases, in which case the acidic proton is abstracted to make an alkoxide ion (RO-). Alkoxide ions are very useful reagents in organic synthesis.
