Assignment Help: >> Properties and Reactions - Properties

Properties:

The polarity of molecules relies upon which functional groups are present. A molecule will be polar and comprises a dipole moment if it consists of polar functional groups like an alcohol, amine, or ketone. Polarity as well ascertains solubility in dissimilar solvents. Polar molecules choose to dissolve in polar solvents like water or alcohols, while nonpolar molecules choose to dissolve in nonpolar solvents like ether and chloroform. Polar molecules that can dissolve in water are known as hydrophilic (water-loving) where as nonpolar molecules are known as hydrophobic (water-hating).

In several cases, the existence of a polar functional group will ascertain the physical properties of the molecule. Though, this is not all the time true. If a molecule contains a polar group like a carboxylic acid, however has a long hydrophobic alkane chain, after that the molecule will tend to be hydrophobic.
