PROMOTIONS
Promotion refers to upward movement of a worker from present job to another that is superior in pay, responsibility and/or organisational level. Promotion brings improved status, better pay, enhanced responsibilities & better working conditions to the promotee. Of course, there can be 'dry promotion' where a person is moved to a higher level job without raise in pay. Promotion is somewhat different from up gradation which means enriching the place of the job in the organisational hierarchy (a better title is given now) or counting the job in higher grade (minor development in pay in tune with the limits imposed within a specific grade). A transfer implies horizontal movement of a worker to another job at the similar level. There is no raise in pay, authority or status. Therefore, it cannot act as a motivational tool. On the other hand, Promotion has in-built motivational value, as it elevates the status & power of a worker within an organisation.
