Phylogeny of prokaryotes

Phylogeny is a description of the evolutionary relationships between and among taxa. In microbiology there is a heavy reliance on DNA sequence rather than morphology as seen in the animals and plants as data for phylogeny and therefore is normally referred to as phylogenetics. The classification of Archaea and Bacteria for the most categories reflects their phylogeny as we currently understand it. There is, of course, always room for debate in any system and a lively discourse continues over the exact taxonomic or phylogenetic position of several genera or species.
