Pre-painted Steels:
Now some sheet steels come pre-painted or coated through plastics by the steel producer before they arrive at the plant. Plastic-coated steel pipes are also in use; the plastic is usually a liner on the inside diameter. Whenever you flame-cut these materials, eliminate the plastic far enough on either side of the cut so that you would not burn the coating to generate harmful fumes.
Do not breathe fumes from plastic or burning paint in any instance. Besides smelling awful paint fumes also might contain lead, when the plastic smoke might have all sorts of strange things in it. Structural steels frequently are primed with lead- containing paints. These lead primers typically are dark red. Other colours, including gray, also are utilized now.
Degreased Steels
Plates sometimes are cleaned of oil with solvents or degreasers before you get them. Do not breathe fumes from these cleaning compounds. Several of these coatings might be eliminated with a damp cloth. If you are not certain how to clean the plate, ask somebody. Burning solvent fumes might hurt your lungs and nervous system. Some of the fumes shall damage you permanently.
