Amines and amides:
Amines and amides can be described as being primary or 1?, secondary or 2?, tertiary or 3? and quaternary or 4? depending upon the number of bonds from nitrogen to carbon.
Note: A quaternary amine is positively charged and is hence called a quaternary ammonium ion. Note also that it is not probable to get a quaternary amide.
