What is retailing?

Retailing includes all of the activities involved in selling services or goods directly to last consumers for their personal, nonbusiness use. Various institutions-wholesalers, manufacturers and retailers-do retailing. But most of retailing is done by retailers: businesses whose sales come primarily from retailing.

Although most of the retailing is done in retail stores, in current years nonstarter retailing has been growing much quicker than has store retailing. Nonstore retailing includes selling to last consumers through direct mail, telephone, catalogs , home and office parties, home TV shopping shows vending machines, door-to-door contact, online services and the Internet, and other direct retailing approaches.
