  • These are not semiconductor devices; but, they play an integral role in the operations of most of the power supplies.
  • The fundamental schematic symbol for the transformer is as shown in diagram,

  • The transformer fundamentally consists of two inductors that are in close proximity to each other.
  • But these are not physically attached.
  • The device consists of two windings said the primary & secondary windings.
  • The input to the transformer has been applied to the primary.
  • The output is taken by the secondary winding of the device.
  • Alternating voltage is applied to primary winding which induces an alternating voltage in the secondary winding.
  • Although, remember that primary winding and secondary windings are physically isolated.
  • A transformer may be designed in three modes.
