Spatial aspects of several production management problems may not be understood. The decisions to locate buildings, factories, etc., determine the total cost to make the products and ease of service to the customers. Internal design of facilities is concerned with the determination of layout of complete manufacturing systems which includes display location of products in retail store, arrangement of items in warehouse, location of labs in a college campus, etc.
