Alkenes And Alkynes
Alkenes
Alkenes can be acquired by the transformation of several functional groups like the reduction of the alkynes, elimination of alkyl halides, or the elimination of alcohols.
Alkenes can as well be synthesized from vicinal dibromides, i.e. molecules that have bromine atoms on neighboring carbon atoms. This reaction is known as a debromination reaction and is performed by treating the dibromide along with sodium iodide in acetone or with zinc dust in acetic acid.
Alkynes
Alkynes can be synthesized from alkenes by a two-step process that includes the electrophilic addition of bromine to create a vicinal dibromide after that dehydrohalogenation with strong base.
