Fame of NURBS:
Some of the reason for the extensive acceptance and fame of NURBS in the CAD/CAM and graphics community are as described:
- They provide a common mathematical for representing & designing both standard analytic shapes (quadrics, conics surfaces of revolution etc.) and free-form surfaces and curves. Thus, analytic and free-form both shapes are represented exactly and a unified database might store both.
- Through manipulating the control points and the weights, NURBS gives the flexibility to design a big variety of shapes.
- Evaluation is reasonably quick & computationally stable.
