Ethers and alkyl halides:
For these compounds the nomenclature is little much different from preceding examples in that the functional group is referred to be a substituent of the main alkane chain. The functional group is numbered and termed as a substituent.

Note: Ethers comprises two alkyl groups on either side of the oxygen. The smaller alkyl group with the oxygen is the substituent and is termed as an alkoxy group where as the larger alkyl group is the parent alkane.
