Anatomy of the cerebellum
This segment gives a detailed explanation of the anatomy of the cerebellum. The structure of the cerebellum can be examined at three stages. At the stage of large-scale anatomy, the cerebellum consists of a compactly folded and crumpled layer of cortex, with white matter underneath, numerous deep nuclei embedded in the white matter, and a fluid-filled ventricle in the center .
At the intermediary level, the cerebellum and its auxiliary structures can be decomposed into numerous hundred or thousand separately functioning modules or "microzones". At the microscopic stage, each module consists of similar small set of neuronal elements, placed out with a highly stereotyped geometry. Since the modular structure cannot be understood without knowledge of the microscopic structure, this portion explains the three levels in the order macroscopic—microscopic—modular.
